What to Feed for Focus & Memory

When exam season comes around, most parents focus on reading schedules, extra lessons, and revision timetables.
But there’s one thing we often overlook; what our kids are eating.
Because the truth is, you can’t expect a child to stay focused, retain information, and perform well on a diet of biscuits, sugary drinks, and “just manage anything.”
Food plays a huge role in memory, concentration, and energy levels and the good news is, you don’t need anything fancy. We already have the right foods in our Nigerian kitchens.
Let’s talk about what to prioritise.
🧠 1. Eggs – The Everyday Brain Booster

Eggs are one of the easiest and most powerful brain foods you can give your child.
They’re rich in choline, a nutrient that supports memory and brain development.
👉 Easy ways to serve:
- Boiled eggs with bread before school
- Egg sandwiches for lunchboxes
- Scrambled eggs with a side of fruit
🐟 2. Fish – For Memory & Focus

Fish (like mackerel, sardines, or even Titus) is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain function and concentration.
👉 Think:
- Fish stew with rice
- Flaked fish in sandwiches
- Fish added to pasta or noodles
🌾 3. Oats – Slow Energy for Long Exam Days

Oats release energy slowly, which helps kids stay full and focused longer ;no sugar crashes mid-exam.
👉 Try:
- Warm oats with milk and honey
- Overnight oats for busy mornings
- Oat pancakes (a fun twist kids love)
🍌 4. Fruits – Natural Sugar + Vitamins

Fruits provide natural sugars for energy and essential vitamins for brain function.
Best options:
- Bananas (great before exams)
- Apples
- Pineapple
- Watermelon
👉 Keep it simple: slice and pack.
🥜 5. Nuts & Groundnuts – Snack Smart

Groundnuts and peanut butter are packed with healthy fats that support brain health.
👉 Easy ideas:
- Peanut butter sandwiches
- A small pack of groundnuts as a snack
- Banana + peanut butter combo
💧 6. Water – The Most Ignored “Brain Food”

Dehydration = tiredness, poor focus, and headaches.
👉 Make sure your child:
- Leaves home with a water bottle
- Drinks water before and after exams
⚠️ What to Reduce During Exams
Let’s be honest ; these are the things kids love most:
- Sugary drinks
- Biscuits and sweets
- Too much junk food
They give quick energy, but lead to crashes, restlessness, and poor concentration.
You don’t need expensive “special” foods.
You just need to be intentional.
A simple plate of:
- Rice + fish stew
- Eggs + bread
- Oats + fruit
…can make a real difference in how your child shows up mentally.
At this point, you might be thinking,
“Okay, this makes sense… but what exactly am I supposed to cook every day?”
Because knowing what’s good is one thing.
Actually planning meals your kids will eat especially during a busy exam season is another thing entirely.
And that’s exactly why I created the Little Big Bite Cookbook.
It’s filled with simple, Nigerian meals your kids will actually enjoy, plus ideas you can rotate easily so you’re not standing in the kitchen every morning wondering what to make.
Think of it as your go-to system for feeding your kids without stress, even on your busiest days.
